OVERVIEW
Short enough to look manageable. Big enough to catch people out.
The Routeburn gives you a lot in a relatively short distance — forest, sustained climbing, exposed alpine sections and a long descent toward Lake Mackenzie. Most people spread it over 3 days, but the distance can be deceptive. If your uphill fitness, leg durability or pacing is weak, you'll feel it. Get those right and it becomes a much more enjoyable crossing rather than a grind.

OBJECTIVE DEMAND PROFILE
What This Trek Demands
This is what the objective itself demands — not a reflection of your current fitness.
Aerobic Base
High
Sustained alpine walking across exposed terrain calls for a dependable aerobic base.
Time on Feet
Moderate
Shorter than many Great Walks, but still 2–4 days of consistent daily hiking.
Uphill Capacity
High
The climb to Harris Saddle is steep and sustained, the biggest single effort on the route.
Downhill Durability
High
Descending from the saddle toward the Divide puts real load through the legs late in the day.
Strength Base
Moderate
Well-graded but with rocky, uneven sections near the saddle that reward stability and lower-body strength.
Pack Capacity
Moderate
Hut and campsite options mean pack weight stays manageable for most hikers.
Multi-Day Durability
Moderate
Two to four days is shorter than many Great Walks, but still asks for consistent daily output.

Key Physical Challenges
Exposed Ridge Crossing
Harris Saddle and the tops beyond are fully exposed — fast-changing alpine weather can turn a good day difficult quickly.
Sustained Climbing
The ascent to Harris Saddle is steep and sustained, front-loading much of the trip's elevation gain.
Long Descents
The drop toward The Divide is long enough to test knees and quads on tired legs.
How to Prepare
To enjoy the Routeburn Track, focus on these key areas.
1
Build endurance
Comfort with 5–8 hours of hiking on exposed alpine terrain.
2
Train for exposure
Confidence on exposed ridgelines in changeable weather.
3
Practice consecutive days
Build durability with back-to-back longer days.
