OVERVIEW
Into the high Khumbu
The classic Nepal-side route starts and finishes in Lukla. Follow the Dudh Koshi through Phakding, climb to Namche Bazaar, then continue via Tengboche or nearby Deboche, Dingboche, Lobuche and Gorak Shep to Everest Base Camp at about 5,364 m. Common schedules include acclimatisation days at Namche and Dingboche. Return broadly through the same valleys, often via Pheriche. Kala Patthar is a separate, optional climb from Gorak Shep—not Base Camp. Allow roughly two weeks on the trail, plus travel and weather-buffer days; exact distance and duration vary.

The altitude profile
Illustrative altitude progression based on a typical classic EBC route. Actual routes and acclimatisation schedules vary. These are approximate point elevations, not a GPS track or cumulative ascent; smaller climbs and descents are not shown.
Lukla to Phakding loses about 250 m overall. Later, the descent towards Phunki Tenga precedes the climb to Tengboche. Namche and Dingboche commonly include acclimatisation days and gentle side walks, adjusted to symptoms and local advice. Kala Patthar is optional: published elevations span roughly 5,545–5,645 m depending on the endpoint.
ALTITUDE EXPOSURE · A SEPARATE DEMAND
Train for the walking. Respect the altitude.
As air pressure falls, less oxygen is available with each breath. Your sustainable work rate drops, while the same walking pace places more strain on the body. Disturbed sleep and reduced appetite can further erode recovery. A strong aerobic base helps with the physical work, but good fitness does not prevent altitude illness.
Ascend gradually and keep the schedule flexible. Do not continue higher with symptoms of altitude illness; if symptoms worsen, descend and seek medical help. Training and a readiness score cannot replace acclimatisation or a personal medical assessment.

What to Expect

An endurance trek, on mountain ground
Stone steps, bridges and forest give way to open slopes and rough glacial moraine. The climb to Namche is sustained; before Tengboche, the trail loses height towards Phunki Tenga and climbs again. Above Lobuche, uneven footing and thinner air slow progress. This is normally non-technical trekking, but snow or ice can make sections more demanding.

Recover between walking days
The classic trek uses teahouses and lodges. Facilities generally become simpler higher up; cold rooms, disrupted sleep and reduced appetite can make recovery harder. Eat regularly, keep warm and protect your rest. Carry water, food and layers in a daypack; porter-supported duffels and self-carried loads create different training demands.

Walk well again tomorrow
Expect several hours on foot, repeated climbs and descents, and a deliberately restrained pace. High days can feel much harder than their distance suggests. Start easily, take time to eat and drink, and keep reserve for the return. Reaching Base Camp still leaves a long walk back to Lukla.

Stone steps and repeated vertical work accumulate long before Base Camp. The final return is not a cooldown: it asks for downhill control after many days on foot.
Manage effort at altitude
Slow your pace as the air thins. Trying to hold your low-altitude speed can turn a manageable climb into an exhausting day. Good fitness does not prevent altitude illness.
Protect the next day
Cold, long hours, pack carrying and limited sleep all draw on recovery. Practise eating, layering and pacing so you can finish with enough reserve to walk well again.
Where people get caught out
Everest Base Camp difficulty comes from repetition, environment and altitude as much as the trail itself. Preparation should reflect all three.
Training for one hard hour
Short gym sessions alone leave gaps in aerobic endurance and long-duration walking. Build sustained easy work and gradually longer days on your feet.
Forgetting the return
Ignoring descents, loading a pack too quickly and skipping back-to-back walking can leave you unprepared for tired legs on the way down.
Spending your reserve too early
Overpacing the first days, assuming fitness protects against altitude and arriving exhausted from last-minute training all reduce your margin. Train consistently, then arrive recovered.
How to Prepare
Your training should serve the mountain. Build a repeatable walking capacity, then add the climbing, descending and pack demands you expect on your itinerary. How fit do you need to be for Everest Base Camp? Prepared enough to recover and walk again—not simply finish one hard session. Fitness supports the work; acclimatisation remains a separate job.

Build the engine & time on feet
Develop a sustainable aerobic base with easy, conversational work—often called Zone 2. Gradually extend walking and hiking duration so long trail days become familiar, without making every session hard.

Build strength & train the climb
Use lower-body and full-body strength work to build reserve. Add controlled step-ups, hills or incline walking, progressing towards sustained climbing at a pace you can repeat.

Train the descent & progress the pack
Introduce descents gradually to condition the quadriceps for braking. Practise balance and controlled lowering. Build pack exposure towards your actual carried load; increase one demand at a time.

Build repeat days & arrive recovered
Add appropriate back-to-back walking days once your base supports them. Practise fuelling and recovery between sessions. Reduce training fatigue before departure; last-minute overload cannot replace consistent preparation.

PREPARE FOR THE TREK
Plan the conditions around the training
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are common trekking windows. Even then, expect cold nights and possible snow high on the route. Monsoon cloud and rain can disrupt access; winter brings colder conditions and snow. Build weather-buffer days around Lukla flights.
Confirm Sagarmatha National Park entry and Khumbu local entry or registration requirements before departure. Guide and TIMS rules can change and their application in the Khumbu should be checked with current authorities and your operator. This guide deliberately avoids fixed permit fees or blanket exemption claims.
