Trek Preparation

Trek Ready Week 4: The Downhill Tax

Practise controlled descents, notice next-day recovery, and make a useful halfway check without adding extra work.

Trek Ready Week 4: The Downhill Tax

A climb usually announces itself. A descent can feel easy until your thighs send a message the next morning. If your trek has long downhill sections, they deserve practice too.

Let your legs learn the descent

On a downhill step, your legs help control and brake your body. Shorter, steady steps and deliberate foot placement can make the movement more controlled. Strength work helps, but the trail also asks you to judge loose ground, slope and balance.

Use the descents already in your assigned Mountain Day. Do not add a separate downhill workout. Build gradually and check how you feel the next day. If soreness is unusually strong or does not settle, keep the next exposure similar or easier rather than adding distance, steepness and pack weight together.

Halfway is a check-in, not an exam

Ask what feels more repeatable. Can you keep an easy pace on climbs? Are your steps steadier downhill? Does Mountain Day leave you less drained the next morning? “Nothing obvious yet” is a useful answer too.

In the Journey, copy your Week 4 squat, press and hinge working sets from FITR, then record your assigned Mountain Day time. Choose outside or treadmill and note the uphill or slope if you know it. The timeline shows the work completed; it is not a fitness score. A strength percentage only appears when you repeated the same exercise and number of lifts at similar difficulty.

This week's action: Practise one controlled-descent cue on your assigned day, note next-day recovery, and fill in the halfway check-in.

Evidence note: a small downhill-walking study supports gradual familiarisation. It does not prescribe a particular dose for your trek.
